People love the convenience of tablets. They can shove them into briefcases or hand bags and go on their merry way. E-readers are even easier to transport because they’re smaller. It’s no wonder that everyone wants a piece of the tablet and e-reader pie.
According to a Wall Street Journal report, Apple’s new iPad mini has received less than rave reviews from the Asian market. It could be the price or it could be the fact that the iPad mini looks more like an e-book reader.
The iPad mini’s new look is no surprise. Experts believe that Apple created the device to get its foot in the door of the growing e-book reader market where it will compete with Google, Amazon, Samsung and, soon, Microsoft.
Like everything that Apple produces, the iPad mini has a hefty price tag that could put some people off. Some experts believe that the mini will take business away from the standard iPad tablet. It’s hard to say now how people will react.
Grand Cathay Securities analyst Mars Hsu, according to the Wall Street Journal, said that it is unclear how popular the new tablet will be with a price tag of $329, given a sluggish global economy. Both [Google’s] Nexus 7 and [Amazon’s] Kindle Fire HD start at $199 in the U.S.
Apple will have a lot of competition in the e-reader market. Does it make sense for the company to get into such an already crowded space? It’s hard to say. For the moment, things don’t look good for Apple, at least not in the Asian market. The company may fare better in the American and European markets, once the reader goes on sale in early November 2012. Only time will tell in the end what people are willing to pay for.
