So you’ve decided to break away from the 9:00 – 5:00 grind of working for someone else and have your own business. But, how do you make sure that your business will be a success? Well, here are four tips that will help:
Clearly define your specialty
What do you like doing? No, no — cut down your choices to that one thing that you REALLY like to do. Okay, now do some research in the search engines and see the possibilities for having a businesses for your specialty. Now see if you can narrow it down even more to the one thing that you can focus on that will put you above your competitors.
Trust in your specialty
Remember I said above that you want to focus on one thing? At this point, you need to believe — believe that your specialty will be a success. Sometimes it’s very hard to resist the urge to diversify into several different directions, especially when you have a customer standing in front of you asking you if you do so and so, and you have the ability to do that job and do it well. Stick to your specialty and put your trust in it that it will carry you towards your ultimate goal of success.
Believe in outsourcing
Outsourcing can be a benefit to small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs). Outsourcing is not only limited to large corporations; there are plenty of freelancers that you can get through freelance marketplaces like oDesk.com, Elance.com, or other marketplaces from all over the world. Just take a look at three ways you can approach outsourcing without a lot of effort:
- Categorize existing tasks that are not critical to your skill sets that you can have an independent contractor do. This will free up your time so you can focus on what you do best.
- Before you farm out your work to freelancers, you want to make sure that you provide clear guidelines and milestones
- Act now before you are so swamped that you can’t give the time of day to outsource those basic tasks that freelancers can handle quickly and efficiently. This would allow you to test out a few freelancers and build a working relationship with the one you like best.

I never said that the road to success would be easy; many roadblocks can get in your way. But you can and will succeed if you believe in yourself and tell yourself “I can succeed and will.”
