Due to an increasing demand in British Columbia (BC) for new phone numbers, The Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) is adding a new area code within the province that will be available on June 1,2013. Currently, BC’s area codes are 778, 604 and 250; the new area code will be 236.
The CRTC reports that individuals won’t be required to change their current phone numbers, and existing area codes will continue to be used as they are for now. The availability of area codes and timing for the addition of new ones is based on local demand and inventory.
The National Regulator for the CRTC said that after June 1st, businesses and individuals who request new phone numbers can expect to get one with the new area code, 236. Long-distance calling that’s governed by geographic boundaries won’t be affected.
Businesses have been encouraged to start making necessary changes by reprogramming their equipment and communication systems. A group of Canada’s major telecommunications companies that goes by the name The Western Telecommunications Alliance is currently working to advise businesses and customers about the new area code.
