In June 2012, Facebook introduced its App Centre in the United States. Since then, the company has been rolling out the App Centre to other countries such as Germany and the United Kingdom and – as of July 9, 2012 — Canada.
According to a post on the company’s Developer Blog, Facebook decided to expand its horizons because “approximately 80% of our monthly active users are outside the U.S. and Canada, so we’re starting to make the App Centre more available globally.”
Facebook will also provide a localization tool that will allow developers to translate apps into their local languages as well as the languages spoken by those who use them the most. So, for example, the Spotify app could appear in English to English-speaking users, such as people in the U.S., in Swedish to Swedish-speaking users, and any other language the app developer wanted to include.
The launching of an App Centre does, of course, put Facebook in a position to compete with the Apple App Store and Google Play.
